"Marcus is an exceptional piano teacher—and I suspect few fully appreciate the calibre of his teaching. His inventive, responsive approach has allowed our son to explore his musical curiosity while developing real skill and confidence at the piano.
To offer just a few examples of that calibre: a few months ago, our son stated clearly that he would rather give up piano than learn to play by reading notes. Instead, his preferred method of learning was to memorise long pieces by closely watching and listening to others play. Rather than imposing a traditional method, Marcus adapted his teaching to support our son on his own terms. (As a result of this personalised approach, our son’s working memory expanded and, quite unexpectedly, this also led to a significant academic improvement.)
Marcus also encouraged our son to compose original pieces and, through that creative process, introduced all the foundational chords—so seamlessly that our son didn’t realise he was being taught; he was simply enjoying the act of composing.
Just a week ago, our son asked to begin learning to read music, now driven purely by his own curiosity—something that would almost certainly have been stifled under a more rigid, traditional approach. Though we asked Marcus to prioritise our son’s passion over progression—which he did—our son is now playing Grade 8 pieces by his own initiative, after just four months of playing piano, and his love for the instrument continues to grow.
